When construction began in 1990, developers focused on creating a family-friendly neighbourhood that offered amenities for all residents. They did this by creating many parks throughout the neighbourhood that are linked by serene walking paths and water features. Heritage Lakes sits adjacent to Grandin and Riel Business park and borders Edmonton. It is a perfect place to raise a family due to its many parks and family events hosted year-round. In 1992, residents established the Heritage Lakes Community Association to put on family-friendly events and keep the neighbourhood beautiful and welcoming.
